Try to find someone from your circle and then invite him to your office and let him work from there. Assign him small responsibilities e.g. ask him to handle one project where your team is working by offering some small fee. Check his contribution how he is helping team in understanding the tasks/ solving the issues or whatever roles you want him to fill in. This way, you would be able to see how he is performing. Whether he is taking the pain or not.
This *courtship* period, will give you enough insights about the person so that you can make the decision.
Note: This approach helped me to decide on *not hiring* one of my friend as a CTO/ Co-Founder for my company
